Naidu served as a minister in the state cabinet from 1980 to 1983 and became general secretary of the TDP in 1985. He played a key role in building up the TDP’s organization and became the party’s coordinator when it was out of power from 1989 to 1994. However, Naidu remained a significant figure in national politics and was reelected to the state assembly in 2009. He served as the leader of the opposition in the state assembly from 2009 to 2014. In 2014, the TDP allied itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and won a plurality of seats in the state assembly elections. Naidu was sworn in as the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh for the fourth time. After the party’s poor showing in the 2019 general elections, he stepped down as chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.
